In 2001 he left Durrell to set up the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) in partnership with the Swiss-based PanEco Foundation and Yayasan Ekosistem. Ian’s focus is now on rescuing illegal pet orangutans and returning them to a life in the wild via the haven he is establishing. He continues to research and monitor the remaining wild Sumatran orangutan population in a mission to protect and preserve these gentle apes.
