Final bursaries on offer for budding radio presenters and producers

Islanders wanting to pursue studies, or embark on a career in radio presentation, radio production or broadcast journalism are being invited to apply to the John Uphoff Memorial Trust which is offering up to 2,000.00 to help them.

Applicants for the bursary have to be aged 16 or over; have lived in Jersey for at least three years (or have a significant connection to the island), and they must have a passion for radio. Following the death of 48 year old BBC Jersey radio presenter, John Uphoff, in August 2008, his family, colleagues and friends decided to set up the John Uphoff Memorial Trust to help nurture radio talent and offer financial assistance to those striving to make their mark on the industry John loved. Since then a number of bursaries have been awarded to islanders to help them pursue their studies and buy equipment needed for university courses. Funds for the Trusts bursaries have been raised over the years through various donations and activities including a memorial walk, car boot sales, an open afternoon and the profits from sales of the John Uphoff Children’s Story Book; a publication of stories written by John for his nephew.

Jan, John Uphoffs wife said: Nine years on, John would have been astonished at what’s been achieved in his name. Using this money to help people wanting to break into radio presentation or production is exactly what John would have wanted.

“This final set of bursaries will be extra special as we wind down the Trust but we are delighted that John’s memory will be kept alive through an Award within the public speaking section of the Jersey Eisteddfod.

Interested applicants need to send a CV and covering letter explaining why they’re applying for the award and what they intend to do with it. Applicants are also encouraged to include an example of their audio work if possible, although previous radio or media experience is not necessary.

Applications will close on 12th December 2017 and successful applicants will be invited for a short interview with a panel of the Trustees.
