AJC event highlights 25% tax refund boost opportunity to charities

The event, which forms part of the AJC’s Monthly Talks Series, saw Revenue Jersey’s Heather Morgan and Caitilin Anderson address an audience of charity representatives about the ‘Jersey Gift Support’ scheme and regular payroll giving, through which charities can benefit from a 25% tax ‘refund’.

Through Jersey Gift Support, charities can claim an extra 25% from lump sum donations of £50 or more, where the donor is a Jersey taxpayer, by asking the donor to complete a simple form. The process has recently changed, to make it easier for both donors and charities.

Through payroll giving, meanwhile, employers can set up a process whereby if their employees donate a total of £50 or more over the course of the year direct from their salary, the beneficiary charity can then claim an extra 25% as a 'lump sum donation'.

Commenting on the event, Marcus Liddiard, Chairman of the AJC, said:

“It’s still the case that too many charities don't claim the extra tax on donations of £50 or more, either one-off donations or smaller monthly donations that exceed £50 in one year, that they are entitled to. Both Jersey Gift Support and Payroll giving are really helpful solutions that can have a real impact and go some way in addressing the triple threat we know local charities are facing – rising costs, increasing demand for services and declining fundraising.

“I’m really grateful to Caitlin and Heather for taking the time to talk to our members and walk them through the process to ensure that they understand how to make these claims, and don't miss out on extra funding.”
